Disney and Media

Disney is a very large and successful business. It is the second largest media conglomerate according to business insider. It owns many other companies including Marvel studios, ABC television, Pixar studios, Lucas Films and ESPN. It also has other industries outside the media including the numerous disney parks, the disney cruise line, disney theatrical groups like disney on ice and disney music. There are also many television channels owned by Disney including the Disney channel, Disney XD and Disney junior.

Disney have produced over 600 films in the past eighty years, including the ones made by other companies they own such as Lucas Film and Pixar. They make near 10 films on average per year that are screened in cinemas and contribute a large amount to their annual profit.

The highest grossing film has been 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (grossing $936,662,225) but the highest grossing film made by Walt Disney Studios has been the remake of 'Beauty and the Beast' (grossing $504,014,165) which was made this year.

According to disneycompanyprofile.weebly, Vertical integration is when Disney has to produce, market, distribute, and create merchandise for their product. An example of this can be seen thanks to the High School Musical series. Disney produced it in their studios, marketed it on Disney Channel and ABC News by interviewing the cast. Their merchandise included, apparel, purses, make-up, and later, a theatrical version of High School Musical. Synergy can include the Lion King film series. It had have three sequels, a hit Broadway play, the soundtrack for the play and the first film was available but they both also had shirts, cups, and other souvenirs.

A great example of a horizontal integration, according to investopedia, is Disney's acquisition of Pixar Studios. Disney, facing market saturation with its current operations, was looking for ways to expand and increase profits. Disney had started out as an animation studio that targeted families and children. Pixar Studios also operated in the same space as Disney, but it had more cutting-edge technology when it came to digitally animated movies. To grow its market share, strengthen its product line, reduce its competition and access new markets, Disney acquired Pixar Studios.
